Party Guide
The Enjoyment of spirits, wine and beer has been part of world culture for
centuries. Nothing compliments a social gathering or a relaxing afternoon quite
as well as good conversation and good drinks. Listed below are some useful
hints for responsible drinking and hosting.
FOR THE RESPONSIBLE HOST
• Always measure to the recipe in
mixing cocktails; don't over pour. It doesn't do your guests a favor.
• Serve food, particularly high
protein foods, to go along with alcohol drinks. Avoid just salty snacks which
make guests thirsty and encourage extra drinking to quench the thirst.
• Keep an array of non-alcohol
beverages on tap to pour between drinks - sodas, juices, coffees, teas, waters.
Try making a blender of "virgin cocktails" so that guests who can't drink don't
feel they are missing out on the festivities.
• Don't look to keep the glasses of
guests constantly full.
• Respect an individual's decision
about alcohol. People have a right not to drink, just as they have a duty to
drink responsibly.
• Never press a guest to "have one for
the road."
• Make contingency plans for those
among your guests who drink too much. If this occurs, despite efforts to
prevent it, take responsibility for the health and safety of guests, such as
providing transportation to their homes, or providing overnight accommodations.
FOR THE RESPONSIBLE GUEST
• There is no beverage of moderation,
just a practice of moderation. Standard servings of beer, wine and spirits
contain similar amounts of alcohol. Respect the potency of all alcoholic
beverages.
• Don't drink on an empty stomach.
Food helps slow down alcohol absorption.
• Pace your drinks, one to an hour.
Alcohol won't have a chance to build up in your bloodstream.
• No two adults are exactly alike.
That's why precise rules about personal drinking limits cannot be set down
rigidly and applied to everyone. Even your own safety limits vary from time to
time, depending on your health and mental outlook.
• Be especially careful if you are
tired or upset. If you seldom drink, or drink only during holidays, be extra
careful.
• Be cautious if you are taking
medication. It can multiply the effects of alcohol.
• Drunk driving is not only illegal,
but it is very dangerous. Don't get into a car with an intoxicated driver. Make
advance plans for alternative transportation if overdrinking is a possibility.
Editor's Note: These tips were taken in part from a report by the Education
Commission of the States, Task Force on Responsible Decisions About Alcohol.
